The suggestion with the ppa above did not work as apt refused to use that repo. Reported by: Csanyi Pal

Something obviously isn't playing nice. All you need to do now is to choose one that works for you (vaapi should work on your graphics card). Message #10 received at [email protected] (full text, mbox, reply): From: Darren Salt
This is what came up in the terminal-MPlayer SVN-r36265-4.8.2 (C) 2000-2013 MPlayer Team 203 audio & 423 video codecs mplayer: could not connect to socket mplayer: No such file or directory Vdpau Ubuntu The time now is 04:46 AM. In numerous cases do I get a warning that libvdpau_i965.so is being tried to be accessed but it fails.
One suggestion I found was to link libvdpau_nvidia.so to libvdpau1-0.6-2.4.1.x86_64. clutzer wrote:Instead of creating a symlink, you can create the environment variable:VDPAU_DRIVER=va_gleither for the user in question, or system wide.Doesn't work for me:% vlc screencap.mp4 VLC media player 2.2.1 Terry Pratchett UPDATE Don't laugh, (okay, laugh at me, go ahead ;) - but I just opened Gnome-MPlayer for myself and in preferences, you can choose your video output module! None, the status of the bug is updated manually. graysky wrote:pkgfile -S libvdpau_i965.soSlightly O.T., but pkgfile doesn't have an "-S" flag, it does have a lower case "-s" which is also the default. vdpau (sorry if I misspelled earlier) is only currently available on nVidia and (to my knowledge) Intel cards. How can I install libvdpau then? –Tim Mar 13 '11 at 19:44 @Tim with that particular tarball, you have to run ./autogen.sh first, then ./configure --prefix=/usr, make and sudo The system is Fedora 22, Linux tivx95 4.1.3-200.fc22.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Jul 22 19:51:58 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux [[email protected] ~]$ cvlc .& 21483 [[email protected] ~]$ VLC media player Message #20 received at [email protected] (full text, mbox, reply): From: Santiago Garcia Mantinan
Here's my config: [default] vo=vdpau,xv, vc=ffh264vdpau,ffmpeg12vdpau, ao=pulse really-quiet="1" fs=1 xineramascreen=1 msglevel=all=0 showsubtitles=0 You probably don't want the vo and vc lines (I'm a Nvidia user) and you might not want any After a couple of minutes, the CPU throttles hard as it gets too hot (verified with sensors), making the video unwatchable. The "error message" is harmless. I'm not really impressed with the results.
