I tried a number of other suggestions until finding yours; as soon as I applied the Cumulative Update for Internet Explorer and then rebooted the system wuauclt.exe is no longer hogging So as of right now turned Laptop on took a while for updates to install 9 in total.And happy to say my (CPU usage) has dropped to 1% AND only spikes http://silkiconfinder.com/high-cpu/windows-7-high-cpu-usage-after-update.html

What's interesting is that the problem more often appears on the clients having 2 GB of RAM. I've also noted that sometimes the folder SoftwareDistribution increases in size during a period of time, and after that nothing happens and svchost continues to consume an entire core. A colleague of mine was experiencing the same issue (100% CPU during updates on 2008R2) and tried disabling IPv6. I disabled Windows Update so I could experiment, because it seemed as soon as Windows Update started I finished with accomplishing anything.
